Emoji Decode is a fast puzzle game for 1 to 16 players. Each round shows a short string of emojis and a category — a movie, a food, a place, a phrase or a holiday — and everyone races to type what it spells. 🍕🇮🇹 is easy. 🐝🍃 is a little harder — say it out loud: “be-leaf”, or belief.
Rounds are short, so a full game takes about five minutes, which makes it a good warm-up while people are still arriving. You can even play alone to practise. It is free on FamGames.
What you need
Any number of players from one to sixteen, each with their own device — or one phone held up for the whole room in one-phone mode.
Rules: how a round works
- Read the emojis. Each round shows a string of emojis plus its category.
- Race to type it. Type your answer. Small typos are forgiven, so speed matters more than spelling.
- Watch for hints. After a few seconds the letter pattern of the answer appears, then some letters fill in.
- Reveal. The answer is shown along with who solved it and how fast.
Scoring
Each puzzle is worth up to 150 points depending on how quickly you solve it, with an extra bonus for solving it first or second.
Difficulty levels
- Easy: Well-known answers, more time and early hints.
- Normal: Every kind of puzzle.
- Hard: Phrases and places, less time and only the letter-pattern hint.
Tips and strategy
Read the category first
Knowing it's a movie rather than a food cuts the possibilities enormously.
Say it out loud
Many puzzles are sound-alikes: 🐝 can be “be”, 👁️ can be “I”, 🌊 can be “sea” or “see”.
Use the letter pattern
When the blanks appear, count the words. “_ _ _ / _ _ _ _” tells you it's a short two-word answer.
Don't overthink
Most answers are well-known titles and phrases. If your answer feels obscure, it probably isn't the one.
Variations and house rules
- Make your own: between rounds, each player writes an emoji puzzle in the group chat for the others to solve.
- No typing: in one-phone mode, the first person to shout the right answer keeps the phone and reads the next one.
Who it's best for
Quick warm-ups, big groups, players who love wordplay, and anyone who wants a game that needs no explanation at all.
